CoderDojo @ TR – 21 April 2018

On Saturday 21st of April we had our first CoderDojo event for 2018. This event was sponsored by Thomson Reuters in partnership with the International School of Zug and Luzern.

We ran robotics sessions for the younger kids (second and third grade). These sessions were split further into Robotics I and Robotics II. The Robotics I kids were introduced to basic robotics and coding using Lego WeDo 2.0. In Robotics II, the kids spent the first half building their own Thirsty Plant Kit which they could use to monitor when a pot plant needed watering. During the second half they were building advanced Lego WeDo robotics models designed by Yoshihito Isogawa.

For the older kids (fourth to sixth grade) we were making music using Sonic Pi. The kids were introduced to Sonic Pi (a computer language based on Ruby) and then spent some time creating their own music.

We have had fantastic feedback from the kids and parents who attended, and all the helpers had a lot of fun too! Thanks to Thomson Reuters for sponsoring and hosting the event. Thanks also to ISZL for the use of their iPads and for the teachers who volunteered their time.

We plan to do a German language Dojo at the end of June.
